Bow Swap Build for Apex

Postby BK in TEXAS » Sun Jul 12, 2009 9:59 pm

One of the neat things about this swap is that I've had the chance to chat with a couple real nice guys that I probably wouldn't have called otherwise. Good stuff.

So after talking with Marty this is going to be a 1-piece hybrid with a low grip ; 62" AMO ; 52-55lbs @ 27"

Other than that the only request he had was a darker riser & lighter limbs.

Here is my lumber corner: I really really need to do some organizing. Blocks & pieces are everywhere & the pampers boxes are full of unsorted call blanks. Uggg.

Ok...so I narrowed it down to a few pieces. The top is Iroko, middle Wenge, bottom Rosewood.
After staring at them for a good half hour I decided to use all 3. I think it'll work, I just hope it's not to busy. I should know after gluing the riser together.

After a little time with a pencil & eraser I went to the bandsaw & started cutting. I got both accent pieces cut & the wenge piece fitted in the rosewood. That's as far as I got. Tomorrow I'll grind an accent strip for between the wenge & rosewood. Since the Iroko is going to overlap the wenge, I'll need to glue up the wenge/accent strip/rosewood section before cutting out the cradle for the Iroko.

Only got a little done last night....had to wait for smooth-on to cure. The Wenge & Maple accent are glued to the Rosewood, and tonight I'll cut out the cradle & fit in the piece of Iroko then glue it up.

One kid down, one to go....

OK, so I didn't even have to glue the Iroko in to see I wasn't gonna like it. Just doesn't work.

Fortunately I had JUST enough left of the Wenge stick that I could use without cutting into another one. Much, much better. I like this. (FYI rosewood is the back of the bow)

The next question is for Marty......I looked through my wood stack and narrowed it down to two choices that I think would look good: Canarywood or Tigerwood. The Canarywood has more visible grain, but the Tigerwood has a subtle "shimmer" to it that you can't quite see in the picture. I think they would both look good.....your choice man!
