Take down recurve build along

Postby Bradford » Wed Feb 15, 2012 10:51 pm

Hey all.. new to this forum but I have been building bows for about 4 years now. I am currently working on one for a guy at work. I see there has not been a build along on here for a while, so I thought I would post mine!

I am doing a take down recurve.. 62" with a 18" riser. He wants it to pull in the mid 60 lbs area. So off we go..

Image

picked out some awesome Honduras Rosewood and fiddle back maple. I know this guy will show the bow off to everyone so wanted to choose some really choice wood.

Image

I glued up 3 pieces of the fiddle back so this handle will be stout. Squared it up and then I glue the rosewood onto the bottom of the maple with tightbond to hold it together when I cut the shape.

Image

I also cut up a couple of pieces 1 3/4" wide and 1/4" thick.. glue together so I can cut out a lam veneer

Image

After cutting up the lam accent, I throw in a few stripe pieces and glue it up. Cut it down the middle and throw it on the drum sander

Then I cut the first section of the riser and glue it up

Image

Cut my limb pad angles (19 degrees)

Image

Cut up the second accent area

Image

Then glue it up

Image

Also made a new limb form for this bow. Has a bit more curve at the tip than my other bow form

Glued on some phelonic to the pad areas for extra support

Image

Made some of the first shaping cuts

Image

I start the handle area by sanding out the "trench" with the dremel. I use a depth gauge so I know how far to go

Image

Cut the window and start to radii the shelf area
