Doing great. Loving this build. One of my winter projects will be to build a ILF for myself. Nice little trick with the dowels.

More riser work. I do the vast majority of riser shaping between a 6x48 sander and the rigid edge sander. So first I rough out some of the larger chunks on the bandsaw.


Load both sanders up with 24 grit Zirconium and get to it.
6x48 for bigger curves.


Rigid for narrower curves.

Once I have the throat of the grip pretty close I mark out the shelf/sight window.


I use the I-Beam as my centerline reference and just grind her down on the 6x48.


Flipped around doing the shelf side




Rock it back & forth a bit & this is what I'm left with after the 6x48.


Here they are after taking them to the narrower Rigid & getting even closer to a finished shelf.
Tonight I'll finish out the shelf & get rid of all the 24 grit marks

intresting-you dont cut out the site window or shelf you grind it out? neat idea site windwos and shelves kick my butt.

yup.... zirconium rock paper sure beats the hell out of screwing up band saw blades too.

i've never tried the 24 rocks per inch stuff. but the 36 rock gets her done nicely.

Wish I could have taken some action shots while finishing out the shelf, but the air die grinder makes a heck of a dusty mess
I just use 36 grit roloc discs and grind down where the belt sander couldn't reach.



Once I get more or less what I want the shelf/window/riser to look like I switch to a 50 grit orbital sander disc. 50 grit is aggressive enough to still do shaping while not taking out major gouges. I make sure the riser is completely shaped before finishing with the 50 grit discs.


All that's left is moving to 120 grit orbital, then 220 grit.
