I don't have a photobucket account -- I am trying to upload my own images (jpeg) from my laptop. Can I do that?

you can resize the photo on photobucket before uploading-select the "edit" option and resize it smaller than 400X400 (preset sizes).

Why in the hell have upload from computer or upload from url if they don't work? Is it to see how determined we are?

Yeah, that must be it. If I recall correctly, we got hacked some time back, and the darn upload function on the avatars hasn't worked since. You have to bring them in from Photobucket or some such place.
