Did the "59" have a high gloss or satin finish?

Mine & all the others I've seen have a satin finish, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some with a gloss. It seems at times the Bear plant did a lot of improvising in those days. I don't know if these anomalies were company sanctioned or not (I tend to think it was more like; "orders are heavy & we'll get behind if don't get these last 50 Kodiaks out today, but we're out of finish for them - should we go ahead & use the gloss?") but there are a fair number of collectible quirks out there.

Anyway, I would just use whatever finish you like the best. Guess you could go with a semi-gloss if you can't decide. ;)

Thanks Jett,

Well... I did it. I sanded her down a bit, then gave her a spraying with satin urethane. I may do it a few more times and rub it down this winter. I got the replica copper coin from Kurt, and have a strike plate ordered from Bob York. The darn thing looks near new. I can't believe what good shape it's in. Thought you might like to see it now.

I love it.

Seriously there's never been a classier looking bow than the '59. Perfect blend of form and exotic woods with no gawdiness. Love that rosewood and purple heart. The refinish brought out the colors nicely. Coin looks perfect, tips look good, glass looks incredible.

Congrats 8-) .

Very nice! She's gorgeous now!

You might try some of Wilsons'/Spaulding's synthetic leather conditioner (the ones they make for baseball gloves) on the grip. It's really good stuff for bringing leather back from the brink, and you can get it cheap at the chain stores right now if they have any left.

I got the replica strike plate from Mr. York, and I made a feather rest for it. She's ready to go. I just hope it holds together because I plan on using it-- a lot. Here's how she looks now. I'm gonna love shoot'n this thing this spring. It may be my #1 turkey/pig bow.
