A Few Howatts

Postby Howattman » Thu Feb 05, 2009 10:18 pm

In honor of the re-launching of our ship (and in keeping with Cap'n Donkey's mandate of civility), I thought I'd post a few pics of some of my Howatts:

Big Saber fan here. No wonder they're so quick with the lack of deflex in that riser. But the longer riser length and the straight limbs make them stable as heck too IMO.

Cool! I only have 2 Howatts. The modern Mamba & the vintage Mamba Hunter I showed you. I was going to buy a Dreamcatcher at a shoot. I told the vendor I was going to take a leak & get my checkbook. When I came back it was gone! He swears his wife sold it unwittingly, but I had got him down $50.00 & I think he got the asking price in the 10 minutes I was gone, LOL! Funny now, but I was fairly hot at the time.

I'll have to get some pics of my toys.

Take a good look at that Saber.... even though there is little or no deflex the grip is ahead of the plane of the limbs.

Good eye, Hank. Don Jewett (one of Howatt's most senior bowyers) was responsible for that design. You can lay an unstrung Saber flat on it's belly. That limb design and configuration is one of several reasons the Saber was such a screamer. That prototype Saber second from the right draws 60# at my draw length but shoots a 2219 just as fast as a bow 10# heavier.

I have NO IDEA why the Saber didn't catch on, but it didn't. I think their limited production numbers combined with their insane performance has greatly added to their mystique.......

What years encompass the production run of the Saber? I don't think I ever heard of them until now.

The Saber was introduced in the 1996 catalog and was discontinued in 1999.
