but what old age has brought..........is an intense enjoyment of being around good friends for a hunt......hanging at the baltimore shoot..........putting a saddle on the pony tuesday morning to help my friend pack in a forrest service trail crew up to junction mt lake .............getting me back into the high back country of idaho where i spent so much time hunting and guiding. the 8 hrs in the saddle was a real takeup though for this 70 yr old body....even though i'm in pretty damn good shape.......at least for walking up the damn mountain. it was the pitch back down to trail head in the saddle that did the ol back in.............3 hrs plus almost straight down in the saddle...........been some 10 yrs since i did a lot of that in one day..............gonna have to come up with some new form of tabata training or just get my ass back in the saddle more. but there's is really nothing like the back high country of the idaho clearwater area..............just totally different than montana or any other state. now i love my salt water marsh country of the eastern shore of mayland........it will always be home. yet age does something for you if you've spent a lifetime with stick and string. the kill seems to no longer be the end goal......it's the finally reaching a point in life where you take in every moment of the friend or friends you are with at the time........when you take in the smells, the sounds, the silence, the fact that what your doing puts among the simple few who even give a damn about it.........the few who will ever get to do it............or ever have..........the few who even get the chance to go back in human time when we had to be hunter gatherers just to live............i mean...........packing up a mountain with a string...............having stock that can step over blowdowns that rub their bellies with a full load on their backs with out blowing up.............with out breaking a pigging string................age slows down some things.................but you learn to make the taste last forever and ever........you learn how to linger with the view..............be it down on the delta .........or up on the ridge trail..........you learn that there is no water in the world that simply taste like the high ancient idaho spring water........probably some of the last water in the world that one can drink pure as it runs off the rocks with out having to add chemicals or boil it................

so below from the damn first bow kill that ruined my life and started this journey with stick and string forever.........one never wants to have his first kill be a p&y 152+ whitetail................it will really mess your out look up for a long time..................just a few............

Very nice animals and some cool pictures of the hunt---thanks TC
I have climbed and clawed from the pits of merciless persecution and suffered the tortures of the damned ,only to be thrust head first into what can be best described as organized confusion.

Awesome stuff TC !
When you take your kid hunting and he says thank you and tells you how much he loves being in the woods with you, your day just isn't going to get any better than that.

Very nice. You're right, that 1st one was a pretty tough act to follow!

Few can provide pictures that match the beauty of their prose. Thank you Burgess.

but i find i still do care........not sure if it will read well below, but here's a collection of trail cam shots i've gotten of the " pine ghost " during the last 4 or 5 years........most of you know that this animal and i have had an on going chess game for the last 5 years more or less........check mate has always gone to the " pine ghost ".........and best that the eastern shore best can put together.........all of us pretty much estimate that he's going on 9 1/2 or 10 1/2 this year. i saw him about a month and half ago...........in an early corn field with 3 other bucks. he was way above his ears and already a decent 4 x4 in velvet that early in the spring.............head and shoulders above anything else in the field..........and the minute he saw me.......the minute..........he left the field while the rest of the bucks just stood there with the duh look. now keep in mind that my home on the eastern shore is probably one of the most red-neck......outlaw........poaching counties in the nation, yet this buck has mastered the survival end of it for all this time. the one picture in the composite in color of him crossing the ditch is one of the few times i have ever seen him in the day light and that was mid summer. i have never seen him in the daylight during bow season.

now..........if i owned all the land that he roams ..........or controlled the land that he roams...........i would no longer hunt him to kill..............i would continure to hunt him with the camera...........but i would just wish him a long old age until time marches on..................it would be a fine last journey for both of us....................

the center b&w profile shot of him was taken this past november during the rut.........gives you a good idea of his age...........his bulk.........his sagging belly..............the heavy brisket of age.........and the amount of junk at his bases .........is just pure antler porn.......................

Burgess, i never knew that you haven't ever seen the ghost during bow season, for some reason i always thought you've had encounters with him but never had the opportunity. I hope you get the chance some day, even if you don't take it.
